The answers so far are nonsensical. It is nothing to do with the possibility of a reprieve, nor any concern over infection.

The needles used in executions of black people who have (or frequently, haven't) killed white people in the US are "one-time-only" sterile steel IV catheter needles which are purchased in "peel open" packets. They are taken out of the packet, used, and disposed of, exactly the same way they would be on a patient who survives the medical procedure involved, as opposed to otherwise, as is the case with lethal injections. The reason sterilised needles are used is simple: no medical supply house in the world sells unsterilised catheter needles. Why would they?

I don't think they are legally allowed to use non-sterile needles on humans for any proceedures. They would have to create a specific extra law to allow execution to be an exception from an otherwise universal law. Even a very basic law costs a lot of money and takes a long time to pass and as such it is just easier to use sterile needles.

In case immediately after the injection, there is a call to stop it and the person is revived, they don't end up getting an infection from the needle.

LOL! I suppose it maintains the idea that the procedure is as "clinical" as possible. And it's hard enough to get some medical technicians to participate as it is.

Also, some prisoners have had a stay issued even AFTER the saline is flowing through their veins. So it makes some sense.

I know what you mean though. Sorry if I ruined the joke! :)
