You will need a router and a very long LAN cable and a Network card in your 98 computer. Or a wireless router and a wireless adaptor on your 98 computer, the problem is that 98 does not recognise WLAN so you will have trouble, the best bet would be a USB wireless adaptor, but check it out well before you buy,I had this problem with a WLAN card I put in a 98 some time ago and in the end I had to install XP, it may not be worth all the trouble and expense. The best way would be LAN with cable

Hi,
These are some options you can consider:
1. Wireless method
- get a wireless router that supports a high-gain antenna to reach the other level. As you are using windows 98, you need to look for a PCI-based wireless card that comes with a driver for Windows 98.
2. Longer Network Cable
- lay a long network cable from downstairs to upstairs. Max 100m. You might need to drill some holes or expose the cables.
3. HomePlugs make use of your powerline (electrical) to drive the Ethernet signals from downstairs to upstairs. You need to be on the same electrical phase for this to work properly.
Here's how to connect:
a. Connect your PC LAN interface to the HomePlug using the Network Cable (UTP). Plug in the HomePlug to another power socket.
b. Connect your Broadband modem or router to the HomePlug using the Network Cable (UTP). Plug the HomePlug to a power socket.
c. Turn on both power sockets and check the link lights on both HomePlugs.

the best way to connect two computers is using a router. that usually depends on the type of connection. If u r using DSL connection thn router type set up will be best. A ordinary router will cost u upto $79.95 or more. using this u can connect upto 4 computers at any given time using ethernet cable(CAT 5 cable).
for a windows 98 computer i would prefer a wired connection as wireless connection may require some more addons to current OS. however if ur planning to buy a router 1st enquire abt it with ur local ISP as local ISP provides some support for them, otherwise it will happen that u r having some configuration problem among ur DSL modem & router but ur ISP will ask u to call router vendor & ur router vendor will tell its a ISP problem. this will not fetch u a solution at all.
a good adwise, buy router from ur ISP if they support any.
as soon u connect router & modem to computer with XP, it will detect all settings by default. thn pull a wire to connect 98 computer upstairs, u should be able to browse by just opening internet explorer. i would certainly prefer wired connection bcoz its less pain to reconfigure & gives u a speed & connection gurantee at all time.
with reguards
tech support from earthlink

You need a HomeHub which is wireless enabled. Plug this in downstairs. Then you need a Belkin wireless adapter which you plug into the back of your computer. You may find that the Internet is much faster with wireless and you won't have a cable trailing all the way up the stairs.

you don't have to go wireless although it is the trend nowadays, you can have a router with ethernet sockets and run a ethernet cable upstairs any distance upto 100m is ok just don't have too much excess cable(you can get them to length) you will also get faster speeds than wireless with a wired network. but the choice is yours. i have both types between my two desktops and my laptop.
