If you want to travel in Greece this period which is off season, the problem is that in the islands you can't find cheap "rooms to let" cause the people who own them keep them closed.
The best deal you can find for Greece, anytime of the year, is to search through your local tourist agents for "all inclusive" packages in hotels. This way you can get even half price of what normally you should pay.
If you want to travel winter time try Crete or Rhodes since they are the south part of Greece, very close to Africa and of course warmer.
If you want to visit archaeological sites, definitely visit Athens and you can go to Delphoi and Olympia.
Crete is also full of archaeological sites so can have a little bit of both

In Athens there is a low rise Hotel called Hotel London. Right on Posidonos Ave. and very close to an area called Glyfatha. This is one of the top areas to be in. It has all the quality shops and most of the people there speak english. The hotel is clean and less expensive than most. Oh and right in front it has the tram line that can take you anywhere in Athens.
Enjoy!!

Where exactly in Greece and when?
If you want to visit Athens click on this link http://www.bookings.net/searchresults.en.html?aid=301441;sid=f3e01035626293971c299578094ae857;city=-814876;class_interval=1;offset=0;ss_all=0 to see a list of hotels. There are a lot of cheap ones.
If you are going to visit the islands on the summer just visit http://www.greekaegeanislands.com to find first your destination and then ask yahoo again for a hotel.
