in Australia the kangaroos do the same thing until you are just about to swerve then jump the same way you are going
many roos gets killed on the roads here
they are there as along the sides of the roads there is grass for them to eat and the road is warm or a cool place to lay depending on the season
i don't know if the dears do the same thing but
as a driver aways be careful hitting an animal can
hurt you and the animal and your car if they go though your window it could kill you if they are still moving
always drive safe

Good question-my husband hit one with his patrol car but didn't see one during hunting-thus we still had venision.We had an 8 point buck get hit in this neighborhood last night-they are building more houses and crowding them out and they have nowhere to go-they just walk anywhere.

It's because of those stupid "DEER CROSSING" signs. If those signs weren't there, the deer wouldn't feel obligated to cross the road and risk getting hit! :-)
