I work for a living but I earn 17,000 a year. I noticed that the boiler and radiators require replaceing and was advised that the cavity wall and roof need insurlating. I was also advised that my windows are rotten and need replacing. I cannot afford to do all this on my budget. Are there any grants in the UK that would help me saving the environment and cost. Thanks

Hi

your boiler probably just needs servicing. The radiators can, I think be flushed out to get the years of silt/gunge out. Then a coat of paint and they will be fine. They will be more efficient if you fit "thermostatic valves" so each radiator can be set to its own temperature.

We had a carpenter repair our rotten windows. He put in new pieces of wood along the bottom, we painted them are they were OK for a few years.

You might choose to replace a couple of the windows on the side of the house which is most exposed to the cold wind with double-glazed units. If you can buy standard-sized d-g units off the shelf they will be much cheaper than bespoke ones from a window company.

Roof insulation you can do yourself. Just make sure you wear the correct face mask and gloves if you use glass fibre wool.

There is a VAT reduced rate for certain items which save energy the list is on the link below, not all installers are aware of this, so you may have to show them the document or they will just charge the normal rate!

some councils will give grants to older homes, people on low incomes and the olderly, from your earning i doubt that it will apply to you,you can buy loft insulation and pipe cladding, double glassing is the dearest, can you fit secondery glassing its cheaper and you can clean the inside instead of buying replacments
