Good question!
I guess if there was one good answer then we might all be better off by now, but it is a good question to ask, because then we all get thinking and Im interested too to see what everyone else says...
I think a lot of course goes back to out childhood. I think there are a few people who are who they want to be, and they had a good upbringing! I mean even if parents try their best, we can still develop negative attitudes and ways of behaving. I guess in some way we were never allowed to develop as we wanted, because out parents/carers even if wanting the best for us, then tried to shape how we develop and out behaviour and at the same time always felt we wanted to please out parents/carers who we rely on. Therefore trying to be what they wanted to get their approval.
I know for myself I always remember that whenever I was happy about something (or thought i was) I got asked 'Are you sure about that?' and the other way around, when I was sad about something I got told 'Dont be sad theres no need to be, its not as bad as that.' I guess questioning is, but not when I think it contributed to me being confused about what my real feelings are!
I also think there are a lot of people trying to prove things to others and themselves that get more powerful and then for their own needs and satisfaction set 'norms'. We then feel pressure to fit in them and so are not being ourselves... or we might then rebel against this because of strongly rebelling might also not know who we are either.
To try and be more positive. Perhaps it is what makes life interesting and worth living, to never be satified and always wanting and tryin to be something else. (Even if it does not always feel that interesting at certain times!) If we were happy with who we were then we could not be changing anything or trying to make a difference.
Thats only a little something of what struck me when i read your question.. I am no psychologist and so of course dont know whether what I said makes any sense!!!!
I look forward to reading what others say!

People like to conform, and try and jump to all kinds of demands.
If you want to be free read just this one book for me. "The Four Agreements" by Miguel Ruiz. It's a real treasure.
