Thanks uknative, have just checked them out but all published too recently. I suspect it is long out of print, thanks anyway.

Have you tried requesting the book through a library. If it exists, they'll find it for you.

I wonder if it's this one: 'The House on the Hill: A Family Story', by Frances Wilding. If so, it's available from Amazon.co.uk, link below. It's in their 'Collectables' section. In the same section, there's: The House on the Hill, by Judith Kelman and 'House on the Hill', by Jack House (all on the same link).
NOTE: Still think the F Wilding one should be further investigated, although I too believe that the J Kelman and J House ones can be discounted. PSS. Have also double checked on the F Wilding one and the original date of publishing seems to have been 1961, so you're right! Sorry not to have been of help.

uknative might still be right. I recently saw a book by Michael Moorcock listed by Amazon as published in 2002, when I know that I read it in the '70s. It seems that the date they show is of that particular edition, or from a new publisher. So these could just be newly brought-out edtions. If you don't know the author it's difficult - could need a bit more digging to find him/her first.

look in a Books In Print encyclopedia of the 50's. A community library would do it.
