It somehow seems Saddam was doing a good job. Things are really messed up now after his departure and all attempts to fix things over there has failed so far.

Great question. The short answer is no, you can't. The Iraqi nation is made up of rival religious factions that really hate each other. If given a chance to kill each other, they will. We are seeing that play out now. Saddam ran that country like a giant outdoor prison. He lavished the Sunni population with money, and fiercely oppressed everyone else. There is a lesson here; in Iraq, you must pick sides. The belief that a Jeffersonian democracy will sprout in Iraq is foolish. The best would could have hoped for was a benevolent dictator friendly to the United States (see Pakistan). What we should have done from the start is support the Sunni's and keep Saddam's Army together on a few conditions. Saddam and his closest confidants must die. They can't be a part of the Iraqi world anymore. Secondly, they must accept a small but robust American military presence in the country. In return, the Sunni Baath party remains in power. Had we done this, the war would have ended 3 years ago, and the Iraqi nation would have been a partner in the war on terror.

Saddam was guilty for many murders in Iraq...I don't think anyone has an objection to that...
But,no,a country like Iraq can not be ruled by anyone else than a dictator...Good or bad Saddam could control the Iraqis.Just look at what is going on there.Entire armies can't control the Iraqis, there is a civil war going on there that no one can stop...

One of the problems in Iraq is the forced unification (by the British, if I remember) they underwent. Regretfully, the old "tribal" and sectarian issues never seem to have been put aside for the common good.

That didn't happen under Saddam either.

Yes, it is possible to have a country with internal differences, as long as those differences are respected and represented. The big issue is, do the Iraqi people actually want that?

That's what we're trying to do now. All I know is Saddams going to grave laughing at us for trying. Another story revealed 1999 war game did conclude if Saddam is over thrown in Iraq the country will become very unstable.

I say NO.

If you really feel this way, I'd say it's inconsistent for you to favor all the contsitutional protections WE enjoy. People are people, all over. We had a bloody history - the revolution, and the civil war.

Some folks sound like they want Saddam to run America!

(He was just found guilty of war crimes, and sentenced to death. Really, can't we do better than that?)

Good or bad, Saddam kept his country united and under control and most of all the terrorists out of his country.

If the panel of appeal judges do not win the current appeal,
he could be executed within the next 30 days and during or
after this time we shall see the fallout from this.

He certainly has the odds stacked against him doesn't he?

I believe the country is better off without him.
