Anne Rice lived in New Orleans. All authors know its best to write about what you know, and she knows New Orleans.

I didn't know Anne Rice was from New Orleans. I had assumed it was to do with the idea of the European influences there and the fact that it's got the reputation of having a dark supernatural side (with voodoo, and other non-monothesiastic religions having been practised there, which the Catholic church termed as satanic - as they did with all old religions which were not Christian) which would have given the place a dangerous and slightly scary image to those more straight-laced Christian types.

Anne Rice lived/lives in New Orleans and it is a wonderful setting. The movie doesn't do justice to the book at all. The movie was much darker and didn't do the characters justice at all.

It's set in New Orleans because that had been Anne Rice's home for many years (in the French Quarter) and she has made it well known to her fans that New Orleans is what inspired mostly all of her novels.
