I've noticed that males in a work group tell gay-related jokes without any fear. They don't just do this with one co-worker but in large groups of mainly men, like at breaks. Is this the norm in the average workplace? In my former workplace, this type of thing would have been stopped very quickly.

If you have an anonymous system for employee complaints, then use it to bring this to their attention. This kind of stuff isn't conducive to a healthy workplace, I would think someone in upper management would want to know. However, if you are working in a smaller company, you will have to decide if you feel its safe to speak up or not.

No, its not normal.

I can't comment on an office type situation but I work in a kitchen and the gay jokes are rife. Most of them are in good humour, we have had a few gay guys in the kitchen and they have been really good sports and play up to the jokes by doing things like deep throating a banana for demonstration purposes. Other times, if one guy is bending over another may go up behind him and simulate humping him. It is a laugh to see two guys that you know are straight doing this kind of stuff but the BIG boss is gay and I doubt they would dare carry on like that in front of him but he's never in the kitchen.

i also worked in a kitchen still as a male
in fact was in charge of one well up until just the other day
every one in the kitchen knew i was gay
they did not know i was a tranny till i left
but i had fun and got them back all of the time
they realized after a while it was not that funny when some one
makes fun of you being straight
i tried to educate them in ways that grossed them out
after the first time i did it or they found out i was gay
they were joking about it when i was not there
this lasted only a few minutes as some one stopped it
after a while they did not dare joke about it as
i always had a come back that was better
some times it is better of easier to come out at work
but if you are not out find away to make people realize
joking can hurt other people laughing about it
can help you get over it
sex should be fun your sexuality should be your choice
fearing others is lie hurting your self

Yeah, it's the norm. And as I gay man, I take no offense. It is just guys blowing off steam. People need to stop being such wimps. Boys will be boys, it is as simple as that.

It means nothing.

It can be the norm..but if you make it clear that you are insulted and offended by them they will generally stop....but it takes more than a bit of courage to do that.

That depends on the place but it is a form of sexual harassment.
