The opposite side of where the driver sits.

WOA!! Hold on - There's a lot of answers here but none that agree...... When turning your car at a crossroads, the Driver's side is called the NEARSIDE ie: When you and another car turn and the drivers sides pass together. The OFFSIDE is therefor the passenger side of the car, and that's when you pull out at a crossroads and turn the car before the oncoming vehicle.

Hope this helps and is a difinitive?

The offside is the side that's away from the kerb, and it should be the driver's side when you park normally. It's always been the driver's side for mechanics and driving instructors- I could never understand it either. When you park, the passenger side is called nearside because it 's by the kerb. I always got it the wrong way round.

If driving in UK the near-side of the car is nearest the kerb (driving on the left hand side of the road).....therefore the off-side is on the opposite side.

The nearside is the side nearest the kerb (usually the passenger's side, if the steering wheel is on the correct side of the car for the country you are in).

The offside is the side farthest from the kerb (usually the driver's side, if the steering wheel is on the correct side of the car for the country you are in).

It is the side nearest the middle of the road and in the UK it is called the drivers side because we drive on the left side of the road.
