You are asking for an answer to a question which is heavily concerned with the theories of creation and evolution, its a wonder why it hasn't been resolved yet. Do you want a Christian, Scientific, Feminist, or other answer? Personally, I'd say they both evolved equally, neither came first as there is so much evidence everywhere which is making the evolution theory harder and harder to discount.

chances are pretty good something that was neither or both split in 2 and became male and female. even in judeo-christian creationsism adam and eve were one being that was split.
