People like dolphins because they are extremely intelligent and also they are able to harm the much hated shark. The noises they make are both high pitched and somehow friendly/playful. Because they interact with humans in a playful manner, it is easy for most people to grow attached to the sweet looking creatures.

Probably down to all the stories we have of them helping people who are drowning, and things like that.
They do, however, have a very nasty side - not only do they coerce young females away from the pod, chase her till she's exhausted and gang rape her, but they also chase other sea mammals for fun, biting and chewing chunks off until the poor animal is exhausted and weak from blood loss, then swim away, leaving it to die without eating it. If yu're ever considering swimming with them, don't do it if you're on your period because they'll become aggressive and try to...well, I think you know what I mean.
Let's just say they're not all sweetness and light. ;)
Orcas (killer whales) do that too, so maybe that behaviour is a penalty for having higher brain function, who knows...

Good question. According to a wildlife documentary I saw, they're one of the few species to engage in gang rape. My delusions of one day communing with Flipper so solve petty maritime crimes were quickly shattered.

Because they're much cuter and friendlier than sharks. You can also go swimming with them :)
