Because the Australian cleric lives in Australia and not Saudi Arabia and western countries do not consider women MEAT who deserves to be raped for walking around in a free society.

Pope is Pope until death. Cleric is a position, with salary, just like a teacher or a doctor. Also cleric can also be defined as "revered holy man", in this case, even if a state suspends a cleric, he would still be a "revered holy man".

(a) Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly wasn't suspended. He stepped down.
(b) Pope Benedict didn't insult Islam. He quoted Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus who made the comment "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".
(c) His point, if you read the rest of Pope Benedict speech, was that Islam was spread through forced conversions.
(d) If you think there is no justice in Australia, perhaps you will be happier if you left.

You have to remember that the Catholic church is very hypocritical, as is much of Islam. The pope is, supposedly, infallible in matters of doctrine, and is treated by catholics as 'holy' even though he is just a man like any other. By admitting he was wrong he would be invalidating the infallibility aspect of his office which would undermine the catholic faith. Another problem is that Muslims seem to be so easily 'offended' if their faith is criticised but don;'t mind 'offending others.

Because what the cleric said was stupid. The pope didn't say these things himself.
