i recently lost my young pole cat ferret whilst taking her for a walk, she slid out of her harness and dissapeared in a hedge, (near lots of rabbit holes) i keep going back and calling her and walking all round for miles, is it true that ferrets will go for miles and miles and be happy killing rabbits? or is there a possibility she will find her way home?

oh, i'm so sorry...and hope you get her back real soon. ferrets can wander off quite a way from home. they have a very short attention span. post signs, maybe someone has her in their house. i have 2 ferrets, and have been a ferret owner for over 20 yrs. mine are trained to come to me immediately when i shake a can of treats...could you try this maybe? ferrets can't live long in the wild...their protein needs are so high, and they don't really have the "kill for food" instincts, since they are domesticated. i'm sure though that there are some exceptions to this "rule." she might find her way home if you've taken her on the same walking route/path and it has become habitual. i'd keep going to the site where you lost her several times a day, and i'd go door-to-door looking for her and alerting the ppl in the area. check with local ferret rescues, the humane society, and call all the vets in your area...unless you live in california like i do, where they are illegal, then you have to be careful of who you talk to. best of luck in finding her soon!!

I doubt she will find her way home. She may appear eventually so you have to keep going back and calling her, however she will be lost and afraid. Put up posters in the area and phone the vets and rescue societies. All of the ferrets I have here were ones which had been found and nobody knew who the owner was. One vet near me takes them in and rings me to come and collect them. It would be best if you didn't take her for a walk again if you get her back. Idealls you should keep more than one ferret, have them both neutered and allow them plenty of time in your home playing together out of the cage. They will be safe and happy that way.

ask the local people if they've seen her. Unfortunately, my mother had a ferret stolen - as they are a "cool" pet to have. Try everything that comes into mind - but if she's gone down a rabbit hole - those warrens travel for miles. Ask around if there are any ferretters around, and ask for their advice. Good Luck - and please let me know if you find her.

I don't know where you live, but in the United States, ferrets are domesticated and do not do well in the wild. Your chances of finding her are slim to none and the chances of her finding you are less. Sorry.

You're probably better off getting a live trap (like a Havahart) and baiting it with Cheerios, placing it where she escaped. Tell the people around there what you're doing and ask for their help, like did they see her and would they call if they see the trap's been sprung.
