why was saddam given those weapons? what was the trade off? how much?

What chemical weapons? They didn't find any when they searched.

The chemical and biological weapons capability was acquired from the US around the time Donald rumsfeld visited Saddam with satellite intelligence during the Iran /Iraq war.The information and infrastructure for the nuclear capabilities including the reactor at OSIRAK was supplied by France.It was sabotaged once before it got there by mossad agents and then when it got replaced Israel just went in and bombed the nuclear plant completely.

George Bush Sr. in his many years in government, including when President, supported, armed, and trained Saddam right up the beginning of the first Gulf War. Remember, the entire Bush family and Administration is in the oil business. So was Saddam. Now they have his oil and he is on trial. Do you think the Sunnis and other Iraqis are happy with this outcome?

Saddam served the Americans and the British when they needed him. They made him what he became.

The persons responsible for the State of Iraq are the Americans and the British. Blair and Bush must be tried and hanged for war crimes.
