Drying of solids can be done by vaccum pump. The wet solid is placed in a closed container (ofcourse with one outlet) and the air in it is pumped out by using a vaccum pump (it is just like the pump which is used pump water from wells)

Gases are dried by passing over drying agents like sulfuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, calcium chloride etc., The choice depends on which gas you are going to dry. For example to dry ammonia none of the above mentioned can be used as they react with ammonia. You need quick lime to dry it.
