Full fat milk is best for young children according to most pediatricians. The fat is good for their continuing brain development. Unless your doctor is worried about obesity and directs you to do otherwise, you should be fine giving them full fat milk.

Whole milk is what the AAP (American academy of pediatrics) advises until a child reaches 2 years. Whole milk is also advised at the first year birthday and not before.
Whole milk has a higher fat content than 2%, 1% or skim milk. Young children need more fat in their diet for proper brain development and proper growth. Some children who are underweight may be advised to continue whole milk past 2 years of age.
Even for overweight or large babies most pediatricians still recommend whole milk. I have only seen a few isolated cases where babies were put on 2% milk.
As far as amounts are concerned, milk should be limited to no more than 24 oz in a day. If a child drinks more than this, they are more likely to not eat as well. Anemia and added weight are also concerns for a child who drinks too much milk.
I hope this answers your question and good luck!

I started giving my daughter cow's milk when she was 10 month's old on the recommendation of her pediatrician. He told me that kid's sometimes reject cow's milk because they are used to the taste of the formula. He actually had me mixing her formula with hte cow's milk, giving her a bottle that was half formula and half milk. And yes, you start them on whole milk for the first year and then the second year you go to 2% and then at 3 you switch to either 1% or skim. I still have my daughter on whole milk because she has touble gaining weigh. Hope this helps!!!

I started giving my daughter full fat milk when she reached one at the recommendation of a health visitor and she's still having it now - just turned two! I'm not sure if and when to go onto semi-skimmed i would get that checked out but i know it certainly doesnt do them any harm if they stay on full fat as its full of goodness!

At 1 year baby can start on whole cow's milk and should stay on whole milk until you and your pediatrician decide it's time to change. Age, weight and general health are all considerations for changing his diet. Just because one baby started 2% at a certain age does not mean that is when your baby should change.

My daughter is just 1 and has been on full fat (whole or blue lid) milk for a few weeks, she was on SMA White before and didn't notice any difference. Blue milk is better as it has all the right nutrients and the fat that a toddler needs.

All the weaning books, and leaflets state full fat because they need more calories. You can give your baby full fat milk from the age of 6 months, but mixed with cereals and food etc, and from 12 months he can have it as a drink.

My sister always started her children on full fat milk - I think because they can get more nutrition from it that way. Actually, I think they are still drinking it and they are now 4 and 1 and a half.

Cow milk is the second best
after mothers' milk.
Cow milk contains less fat
than any other milk and it is
very easy for the child to
digest it.
Full fat milk is difficult to
digest for the child. The
child will have lose motions
and very frequently he will
pass his stool. He may vomit
as well.
