Malaysians were a lot more friendly until that Indian-Islam converted nutter Mahathir turned up. Once he got control of the countrey and tried to tell everyone that what the British had done for the country was bad, it all turned bad. While other countries embraced the good bits of their colonial heritage, for example their colonial buildings, the Malaysians decided to rip them down and generally try to destroy every vestige of colonialism.
The attitude among bumiputras that they deserve things is also a big problem. Bumis get loads of advantages over other native Malysians, e.g. free university etc, just because they are Muslim. No wonder the other racial groups get so annoyed at this blatant discrimination.
Further, the male bumiputra idea that they are to be rude to foreigners seems to be pervasiev. They are lazy and expect everything to be handed to them on a plate, unlike the old Malays who are very hard working, polite and generally wonderful.
In my opinion there is a huge dichotomy between the old Malays and the new ones. The new ones are going to be the ruin of Malaysia, but by the time they realise it it will be too late, and the Chinese malaysians will have got so fed up of being treated as second class citizens that they will be unwilling to help out the Malays.

I am a Malaysian answering this.
Personally, after going to so many countries, I don't think many Malaysian are that nice. The cashiers at a lot of shops do not greet you, they do not show you a happy smile. Manners are not used very often, their tone of talking is not really that nice. I seriously don't know what makes the people become like this.
But overall, Malaysia is not too bad, there are still friendly people out there who want to be your friend.

I must say Malaysians are friendly but still lack of 'Excuse me-s, Sorry-s & Thank You-s'
We Malaysians infuriated when Reader's Digest made a poll & claimed we are in the Top 5 unfriendly country but have we really said THANK YOU when someone spare a seat for us in LRTs, did we say EXCUSE ME when we want to pass the line? The answers from Malaysians are mostly NO, right? And oh by the way, please keep the public toilets clean, dear Malaysians.

I don't think Malaysians are very friendly. Indonesians are much friendlier for example. There is a lot of racial tension in the country and the three main groups all stay separate. Malays and Chinese and Indians all stick to their own communities. People are more polite than warm I think. The government manipulates people through the press by making Chinese fear riots will happen again like in 1969. Most people are fine though there are a lot of dishonest people who try and overcharge foreigners.

I don't know enough about them to give a correct opinion, I have chatted with a boy from Malaysia on Myspace and he is a very nice and interesting person. So if most are like him I defiantly like Malaysians.

We western people dont know much about details. Therefore, in our view there is no difference between indonesian, filipino, and malaysian. I wish you may have distinctive identity in the future so that we may make distinction between you and the others. For instance south koreans and taiwanese have such distint identity which they earned in the last two decades.
