Hard drive as master and DVD as slave.
However, the best way to install them is on separate IDE channels. Most motherboards have two IDE connectors. Put the hard drive on IDE 0 and the DVD on IDE 1. If they are both on the same cable/channel, when you use the DVD drive it will slow down the hard drive read/write speed significantly.

I'm pretty sure you make the hard drive master, and the DVD slave.

Sorry approximately being difficult in the previous, i assume i thought some issues and had to cover particularly some matters "in case" as its harder to flow returned and interactively be sure what works/does not utilising yahoo than it does once you're asking somebody by chat/e mail/communicate board/status next to them. . at the start Stuart has defined how the drives connect in a quite precise way. If im having difficulty figuring the grasp/slave prestige out i in many situations head to the internet and seek for thecontinual producer & variety & thecontinual stats & a thank you to set grasp/slave arise particularly rapidly. From the sounds of it in case you % to proceed down your modern-day direction you could desire to flow into the bios and be sure if the newcontinual is precise detected or no longer, from the sounds of it there could be a conflict (like the two believing they're grasp) certainly however, i think of stuart is stable approximately it being extra user-friendly to apply an exterior portablecontinual somewhat than going and diving into the coronary heart of your previous computing gadget to salvage an oldcontinual for area. For that count in case you do wiish to salvage the present sparecontinual, an exterior enclosure may be a secure wager too. ultimately sorry approximately any confusion on the difficulty besides, there is regrettably lots of distinctive diversifications of each little thing that overlaying them off in one answer is very complicated. you probably did a stable job analyzing my moved quickly explenation.

HARD DRIVE master and DVD DRIVE slave unless you know how to mess with the BIOS config. in which case it's less important.
This to avoid the PC "OS not found" kinda message.

If they are on the same cable, the HDD should be the master.
If possible, I try to have the HDD and CD/DVD on different cables.
But it will work either way.
