The Great Serpent Mound -- which is a Pre-Columbian Indian monument, located in southwest Ohio -- was partly the inspiration for The Spiral Jetty. One of Mr. Smithson's goals was to place work IN the land rather than ON the land -- and voila, The Spiral Jetty is just that, located IN the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
