Pure expansion and contraction Pipes might be a bit tight in the notchings in the joists.

It's probably an airlock. Check which radiators have air in them by feeling the tops and bottoms. If the temperature is even it's OK, but if it's cold at the top and hot at the bottom then there's air in it. You can get a radiator key from a hardware or DIY shop for about £1. It's best to bleed radiators when the heating is off, then there is no risk of getting burned.
The valve is at the top end of the radiator, usually above the knob. Put an old cloth on the floor under the radiator to catch any drips and use the key to turn the valve very carefully. There will be a hiss of air escaping then a dribble of water. Once the water appears close the valve quickly and move on to the next one.
Often one radiator is place slightly higher than the others which means that any air in the system is trapped in one place,so you only need to bleed one radiator.

Most of these answers are right but...you may have a serious pressure problem in the pipes. You might have to have an expansion valve put in by a plumber. Have him check your supply tank also. After you bleed the lines you shouldn't have this problem, do what I've said if it still exists after bleeding.

mostly because you have air in the system. bleed it out otherwise it could be just expansion of the pipes as they heat up or get cold. If it has just started then it is likely to be air and each radiator has a bleed screw on it. Just open the bleed screw just a bit and let the air out until water comes out of it. do each of them in turn. Hopefully that will sort the noises out

"telmah" has the answer. The pipes are touching the joists or floorboards and rub them as they expand with the heat. That's my guess, anyway! I would also check that the radiator mountings are screwed tight.

it somewhat is no longer risky. The shaking and damn is extra suitable than possibly because of the lack of pipe clips and help for the pipes working by the residing house. The damn is the water pumping by those pipes and making them flow, plus the consequence of having the pipe warmth up and escalate which will make the pipes and particularly the aspects around the pipe (pipe shifting against the joists, Floorboards adjusting etc) warmth up and escalate and "click" and "pop". it somewhat is fastened via adjusting the way the pipe are fastened (sufficient clipping) and making an allowance for the thermal stream of the pipework.

The people who have said rubbing against joists as they expand and contract are correct. Its just like plucking a string on a musical instrument. Air -locks and the like would cause different problems.

Metal expands and contracts as it heats and cools. Your pipes have to do this when your radiator is working.

during the night small round frogs crawl through them searching for water flies. It gets worse during the spring as they tend to hibernate in your water tank throughout the winter and are starving by April. Contrary to popular belief frogs actually kill pigeons in the Autumn and store them in the tanks so they osmotically feed them during hibernation. I hope that helps but you should obtain a special permit to remove them as they are now protected species since the new pipe diameter regualtions came in....be careful out there....it's a jungle!!!!!

They usually do it as the heating comes on. If it's really bad you might have to bleed them. (you let a little air out from the side) I'd get someone out to do it as you can burn yourself if you don't know what you're doing!
