People spread rumors and lies, so it's better to just come out with the truth at the first sign of any issues, to quell the rumors and untruths.
Yes, in some cases it IS for publicity, but in the case of Neil Patrick Harris (which is what I'm assuming spurned this question), there has been a lot of speculation and the rumor mill was starting to turn, as he's been in the spotlight more lately, so he felt the need to just come out and say that yes, he's gay and happy, now move along. I respect that. He didn't make a huge deal out of it... merely confirmed the fact that he's homosexual, he's in a happy relationship and that there was nothing more to tell. That's admirable.

I don't think they do, more often than not it is told to them to talk now. and still live with the tabs, I lived in Savannah the house rule was if they are working feel free to talk and get a pic or whatever if not just people trying to live their lives and none of our bizz what they do

Cause it keeps their names in the lights. Notice that celebs never do that when theyve just put out a boxoffice hit, or another grammy.
