The following websites may be of help:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/
http://genealogy.about.com/od/uk_military/
http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazfd/gazfd44.htm

All three have quite a bit of information and links, which may be able to provide you with some leads, depending on what sort of documentation you're looking for.

Good luck!

Try checking with the local Legion Group in your area or with the local library (as they often keep records of papers etc from those days). Check with the MOD about what records are released. You could also try a google search for his name as you may find other service peopel that are still alive or have posted info about times that they served.

jennerferner has got it nailed.

I'm tracing my Grandfather's history through his war records for the First World War and this is tough as much of it was destroyed in WW2, but the links she has given you have been useful for me and the National Archives Office have also been very helpful.

You should have no trouble at all in finding WW2 records.

Good luck with your search.

If he died during the war, the Commonwealth War Graves Commision might have some information.

otherwise I have no idea, try googling for British Military Records.

It depends which theatre of war he was in. If he was in Asia his records will be in the British Library, Oriental section. You have to register as a 'reader' to get in and view records.
Having proved that I was my father's son (not as easy as it sounds:-) I was then able to see his complete record for 1939-46. On payment I also got a complete copy of the records.
