Not with a corrupt government. With the continued population explosion in the Philippines, jobs have to be created, stability in the government and security of the populace.

Foreign investors always look for government stability and security. Foreign Corporations will not invest millions of dollars just to lose it on coup-detats and People Power uprisings and sudden shift of power.

Family planning or population control also has to be established, forgo of the strong Catholic influence in Government. There is a clear line dividing church (religion) and governance. The more uncontrolled the population, the more services the government has to provide its citizens (health care, education, jobs and social services). Jobs and factories have to be created to employ able bodied Filipinos.

I don't think so. Reason: The Philippines face the same problem that many other countries face. An uncontrolled population growth.
The Philippines is mainly a Catholic country with little or no Birth control measures. Therefore, there are many people and not an adequate industrial base. Many people from the Philippines seek work out side of their country. Manila is an overcrowded city with many housing and educational issues.

China has addressed this issue many years ago by controlling the number of children that can be born to a family.

My family sponsors a young child in Cebu, Philippines through an international charity. The Philippine people are a wonderful and happy people and it makes me sad to see that country have so many problems.

The only way to stop poverty is dump unwanted babies at the steps of the nearest catholic church so they can take care of the little problems they force people to endure. Only then will they allow abortion and contraception, since it will cost them money to look after the problems.
Very few Filipinos can afford 2 kids, and I know hundreds of families with more than 10, and they can't feed them.
The other problem is land use and over fishing, this whole country is made up of islands in a jungle, and the fish are very hard to find now out in the provinces and you can normally only eat fruit or juices from a Del Monte or Dole tin.
Read the latest WWF reports on the last remaining stocks of fish and you'll start to understand that there are too many people all over the world for it to survive like this. In ten years this country will double it's population unless something is done.
Even the cans of Century tuna here have remained at the same price, but the contents have halved, it's mostly oil now. The same is happening with other big manufacturers and people don't seem to notice that the packaging changes, the price stays the same but there's not as much in it!

The Philippines is a Catholic country and so there is a strong idea that the use of contraception is wrong. There is already terrible pverty in Manila. You see a lot more beggars and homeless people in Manila than in Bangkok, KL or even Jakarta. People in the provinces have limited economic opportunities and there is a lot of political unrest. In short this is not a situation which will create high enough rates of economic growth. The country cannot deal with the current high rates of population growth.

The biggest problem the country has is overpopulation - even bigger than corruption. The unemployment here is already huge, and the number of jobs will not be increasing. As people have more children (theoretically to take care of them when they are older), the families will only get ever poorer with few exceptions.

I agree with the comment about dumping the unwanted babies at the nearest Catholic Church, but under one condition - people should also stop putting money in the stupid basket as well. The Church is loaded and shouldn't even accept money from poor people.

Education about family planning also needs to be implemented soon to also reduce the number of "wanted" children.
