I have some movie files on an external harddrive and they worked on my own computer but when I try to play them on my friend's computer I can hear the sound but there's no picture. I think it's because I'm missing a codec.

If you want to play it on your computer download VLC-Player. It has nearly all codecs already in it.

Go to http://www.videolan.org and download it. It doesn't need any extra codecs which is very practical, plus some of the codecs can mess up all kinds of settings on your pc.

the first thing to try is to try divx (http://www.divx.com/ ) and xvid (http://www.xvid.org/ ) codec. If you still don't suceed, try a grouped combination codec like http://www.cccp-project.net/ or http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_mega_codec/ , or http://www.filehippo.com/download_codec_pack/

If all fails, you may try reencode your video file. Encode it with commonly used video and audio codec like DivX and MP3. Or if you somehow want to choose a certain less common codec, include an installer of that codec in your external too.

With the program GSpot. This program tells you what are the codecs you need and if they are installed in the computer.
