Sometimes this happens if the keyboard is not correctly identified in the Regional Settings.
Go to Control Panel> Regional and Language Options> Languages (Tab)>Details (Button)
and check the keyboard that is installed , it should be English US
Hope this solves the issue. Anyway you will find the @ sign on the button of " on the keyboard so they are switched.

Assuming you have Windows XP, go to Control Panel. Click the Regional and Language icon. Click Languages, and then hit the Details button. That should give you the option of changing your keyboard to the region you require.

You might just be stuck with it. I have an Acer laptop, nice except for the same problem, and the XP installation carries no option except US English in languages so I can't fix it. Annoying because I have no pound sign without going to look in character map.

it sounds like your keyboard has the wrong setting, to resolve go to control panel, and turn the icons to traditional settings. then click on regional setting icon, in there it should ask for your language IE English (British) or English (us) depending on your keyboard select the correct one and apply.

You need to reconfigure your keyboard to the correct language. Mine did the same thing so I disconnected it, reconnected it and then reinstalled the keyboard driver.

it sounds like your locale is wrong. Your PC thinks it's american, but you're using a british keyboard or vice-versa. You need to mess about in control panel, but I can't be bothered to look it up for you right now - play with it.
