Wal-Mart greeters are part of Wal-Mart's in store security system. They watch out for shoppers leaving the store and check their reciepts for items that are not bagged in the carts. They also check layaway items...although Wal-Mart did away with layaway, so they don't have that responsibility any longer. If a shoplifter leaves the store before a member of the inhouse security can get to them or a manager can get to them, the door greeter can watch for what kind of car the thief is driving or what direction they ran in, etc.
