I don't think the point of our society having capital punishment is to prove killing is wrong. Everybody already knows that it's wrong including killers. The logic behind it is punishment. If you are bad and take away our #1 right as Americans (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. life being the most important) we will make you pay for that life with your own. Society also says "you are not fit to be on this Earth with the rest of us because you obviously have to regard for life" That's why I say put killers on an island where they could never get off and let them fend for themselves. That way if they get killed, it's not the governments fault. And no one has to pay taxes to support them.

No one kills to prove that killing is wrong. That killing is wrong is already believed, and killing the killer is for some people a way of exacting justice. The wage of sin is death, as they say. Anything less would not teach how serious murder is, according to this view.
I suppose that you have to ask what justice demands. Do you think that it is just to kill a murderer? Has his act warranted death by the entire society (through a socially approved organ, like the police or the penal system)?
You also have to consider the political ramifications. A society should be able to maintain its unity and stability. Does the death penalty strengthen or weaken society? Also, does social usefulness matter over all concerns? Are we to be utilitarians at all costs? Or are there things that should never be done, regardless of the consequences? Is the death penalty one of them?
Remember that there are many ethical and political questions involved in this issue. Don't short change the discussion or your opponents. It's very hard, indeed.

Well, killing is wrong but it is more wrong to kill an innocent person. Taking the life of a guilty person (murderer, pedophile etc) is at least somewhat understandable, justified...I'm a peaceful person but quite frankly if some sicko hurt or killed one of my loved ones, I wouldn't wait for capital punishment. I'd kill him myself. I'm not mean, but I'm vengeful. Deliberate cruelty is unforgivable. Self-defense is common sense. That's survival.
Technically we're not supposed to kill or take vengeance. That's for God to do. But I'm fiercely protective of those I love...I wonder if your opinion of the death penalty would change if the one on death row had abused or murdered someone you loved (your mother, brother, best friend, spouse, innocent child)?

It's called justice. There's no excuse for murder. Anyone that does it is dead inside. If you take someone's life, you loose your right to keep yours. How would you feel if someone murders your children or a family member? You wouldn't want that person to ever be let out of prison. What's the difference between life in prison and a death sentence? They both take away the person's life. One way is quicker and let's not forget about the money it takes to keep him in prison.

Killing is wrong because I fear that you will kill me first before I get the chance to kill you. It's only wrong when you cheat, my cheating is justified.
In case you didn't get the joke, I was being sarcastic. A bit dry, I know.

Very good question and one I wish more people would think about.
I do not think it is right for us to take a life as a form of punishment.
