How do the Mescalero Apache now use the land given to them by the US govt?

Apache living on Reservations in New Mexico. Do they use Casino's as an income or have they been able to maintain arable tracts of land?

there are 3 sub-bands that make up the tribe in your question: mescalero, chiricahua, and lipan. they don't soley rely on the casino for income...there is a resort on the rez, big game hunting, mining, timber, ski-resort, etc. many tribes are getting into gaming so they can become sovereign nations. ie; self-sufficient, and not relying on funds from the gov't any longer, and as a way to keep the u.s. gov't out of our business.
there are many, many tribes in the u.s, however, that are so isolated and poor that they can't get into gaming because they are too far off the highways to get any business, and they have so few natural resources, that they have to rely on gov't funding.
the land we native ppl live on, was not "given" to us...we were placed on reservations against our will...land that the gov't thought was useless...as it turns out, some of our land is extremely rich in minerals, gold, uranium, oil, etc. and the gov't wants to relocate some tribes in order to "harvest" the resources for their own use...it just never ends.

Pirate's answer is exactly right. There is a lot more to the Mescalero tribe and its land than you might expect. Also, I've lived in that area, and I'm telling you that that land is some of the prettiest land in New Mexico. Useless? No way.

There's no way any American Indian would ever be able to make a living off that land. Obviously, you haven't seen where they were placed. But in spite of the odds they have survived & are florishing.

most of the land given to indians is useless.if it had been any good the government would of kept it for themselves.
