Do they use some realistic looking replicas that are basically useless and just add sound and muzzle flash later? If this is true, where could I get such things (to make videos)? Or do they use airguns?

Many of the guns you see in movies are real, but have been converted to fire blanks. A blank is simply a bullet without the projectile loaded in it. This is true for most movies, but for the lower-budget ones they will often use good quality airsoft guns and add sound and muzzle flash later in editing. Unfortunately I do not know of any such program.

Some are specifically engineered & designed for them.
They make thier own.
They have contracts w/ manufacturers.
They just call up someone from the Backlot for whatever.

if the movie was supposed to contain murder, they will use fake guns.

if the movie was an action movie, yes they use real guns, and they buy it from the government or a gun shop.
