*.php files are interpreted programs (or simply scripts) written in a language called PHP. To operate your own PHP-driven Web site, you need an account with a hosting company that supports PHP.

*.php are referring to php files,*txt to text files and so on!

php extension are php, php3,php4 .....better prefer php....U can create ur own extension by using MODREWRITE module of the APCHAE WEB SERVER / .htaccess .......So here u must use php with APACHE hosted in Linux/unix server...
