"Riding Lessons" and "Flying Changes" by Sarah Gruen are really good, but they might be a little too 'mature'.

I agree that The Perfect Distance was good, and if you're a Hunter/Jumper rider you'll be able to relate. If you're a horseperson yourself you probably won't appreciate the Sara Gruen books, because she makes a ton of technical mistakes (she's one of those people who knows horses a little bit, but not enough), An AWESOME series is the Blaze of Glory series (Look Twice and Renaissance Man), it's newer, but it's not for kids so if you're too young to be reading about sex, I'd wait a while :)

Yes Black Beauty is perhaps the first one that comes to mind
The Last Unicorn by Beagle (I have seen the animated film of it and have loved the story for its poetic and surreal quality. Its like a fairy tale more of a childhood fantasy yet there is something really intriguing about it. Dont know whether it can really be called a Horse fiction book. Since it has a creature which is like a horse except for the fact that she has a corn)
The book Black Stallion and its sequences by Walter Farley (Again I have seen a movie based on one of his later books perhaps Island Stallion and not read the book. But from the movie thought that the book must be worth a read)

King Fortis the Brave is more of a fantasy novel, but the two main characters have horses that they ride throughout the quest. Humor. Adventure. Horses. Really a great book!

Black Beauty, My Friend Flicka
The Black Stallion by Walter Farley (any book by him is good)
Mustang, Wild Spirit of the West by Marguerite Henry (her books are usually fictionalized stories of real horses or people, i.e Misty of Chincoteague, Black Gold, Justin Morgan had a Horse, Born to Trot)

The book is hard to find, but it is so good. I hate reading and chose it for a book report and loved it!
