Here in India we have EVMs, the electronic voting machines which have been used successfully in several general elections.

The voter has option to vote in by pressing one of several buttons meant for different candidates. After each press of botton the machine gets locked which can be operated again by the presiding officer to be used for the next voter.

After the voting is complete the EVMs are sealed in a particular manner and sent to a dsignated place wich is protected by the administration till the counting is done.

On a designated date the machines are brought and the seal is opened before the designated political agents of different parties.

The macine shows all the votes which wrere given to each candidate. And after collecting information from all centres a candidate who gets most number of the votes, is declared winner.

Sure, though in most instances it would be by absentee ballot.

The thing is -- what difference will it make. If the polls show 10,000 votes were cast one way, and 5,000 the other way, and there are 150 people with paper ballots..... what will that prove.

The problem is that the vast majority of votes will be counted electronically in most states. And those votes are unverifiable. Whether there are any paper ballots or not, that probably won't make any significant difference.

there are ways for people to cheat either way. if you don't remember, there were people EATING hanging chads in the 2000 election. what's to keep them from eating your paper ballot. lol it sounds funny, but some people will stop at nothing, and unfortunately they often get away with it. in Florida at one voting place the Poll Workers left for lunch and the Democratic poll workers only walked outside and came right back in and locked the door. the Republicans came back from lunch and were chanting "let us in! let us in!" and did you ever hear about that? probably not. and it goes both ways. i'm not saying all Republicans were innocent either. there are good and bad apples in both parties.
