I think it is very likely and if they have some decent acquisitions in the off-season, I think they can improve their chances.

They will have to get passed the Twins and the White Sox in their division, and throw in the Angels with some new bats, A's, Yankees (probably with some pitcher from Japan) and the up and coming young Red Sox with their new power rotation
And that is only to get to the world series, where they would have to beat a team like the Dodgers, Padres, Cardinals, Mets or Marlins
Its far too early, but the odds do not look that good now..., no one's odds look that good.
And I only named the teams you would expect to be there or there abouts next year, there is always a surprise team (like the tigers, or the white sox in 05)
I think the tigers have to be worried about how Verlander has performed, not only during the last 2 months, but losing 2 world series games, not exactly what they wanted.
My bet is the tigers are not your 2007 World Series Champions.
(its a shame in some ways, they played well this year, but they had their chance, and really they blew it.)

I do not think that they will make it. Obviously, there will be more transfer to those big clubs which of course make them stronger. I don't think the Yankees will let up once again. I think the Tigers will not win the pennant.
