Whatever you want to tell him - just don't hark on about him only having 10 years to live!! He needs a damned good laugh and don't respect his condition too much. I have a short shelf life but my family fill me up with 'tumour humour' and I don't mind being killed by that!
When I was in hospital last time they telephoned to tell me to get back home - the washing up was piling up, and the other day when I learnt to self inject into my stomach [after 10 days training from the district nurses] my daughter said to them 'there'll be no holding her back now - she'll be on heroin next!'
You should forget about what the doctors have told him, just get on with the job of being a really good, bright and sunny friend - he won't want you casting glances at him that make him feel you are sorry for him!

When I was 12, I was told I has 5-10 years. I went through terrible guilt for the trouble my family went through. I turn 40 in 2 weeks. And now I understand that all the trouble is probably what kept me around. 10 years is an awfully long time in medicine now a days. Tell him not to give up hope. Whenever I here a doctor tell someone that they will die in a specific time frame it tells me 2 things.
1. Get a second opinion because:
2. He is saying to you. "All the patients I treat with your condition, dies."
I personally do not consider that a good note of confidence.

Sounds kind of like one of my friends...
I tell my friend to live life to the fullest. Not to dwell on all the negativity. To not let death weigh him down. Enjoy life while he has it. He's really depressed and sometimes it's really hard to try to cheer him up. He believes that his life is meaningless and worthless. But I tell him it's not. That he has touched people's lives and everyone has a meaning to there life. I say if he was never born then life would not have been the same. That he has made an impact in the world no matter how small. Like the butterfly effect. If he wasn't born... then he would not have been able to help others.

If I knew I was going to die in the next ten years I would try to do all the things that makes life worth living. Love love and laugh. Worry less enjoy more of what life has to offer.

A very grave future to be sure, but life holds hope, for even the condemned. I don't know how or why your friend's days are numbered but I do know that miracles happen to those who absolutely embrace life. I wish you the best.
Peace.

Do not act differently around him for one thing
Just be yourself, if i was you i wouldn't say anything about it
and then if he brings it up, just tell him how you feel
and tell him that you are there for him if he needs you .
I hope this help you may God bless with you both

To enjoy life to the fullest. Either get busy living or get busy dying. It truly is a choice.
