What about excellence, or truth, or goodness? What about wisdom?
What about nobility, or honor, or glory? Even those lesser pursuits seem better than working to keep the cows "happy." For there may be people (I believe that they are rather common) who at least believe that happiness lies in shameful or bestial pursuits. Should we feed the fool the poison that he wants?
Now, you could argue that this wouldn't be real happiness, so it wouldn't count. To make people truly happy would be to make them truly good, virtuous, and excellent. This seems like a good plan, but is it really the end of life? Doesn't the goal of life aim beyond it? Charlie, Sue, and Dave will live for a moment and then be dead. Can the transient really be what we're after, in the end? Yet, if we aim for goodness as such, then our good doings here and now, though limited, would have an eternal and infinite object to them that seems worthy for a human pursuit. Most people call this loving or working for God . . . and that is reflected in loving our fellow human beings. But the fellow human beings are not the ultimate ends of our actions.

No, I do not agree with that.
I think it is about loving and learning and sharing life. Helping to make others happy is surely one of the most pleasant aspects of life but not the reason or main focus of it. We are each responsible for finding our own happiness. It is a matter of personal perception. (What makes me deliriously happy will scarcely draw a smile from someone else.)

Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if that were true, although after spending time in a third world country you realiz how impossible it is to make everyone happy. It is best to Love them all, friend or foe. Love is the essence of life and the best way to change and defeat all the nastiness and evil in our world today.

Absolutely not...Each one of us is given only one life and we should spend it finding what will give us perfect peace so as to enjoy every moment and not feel we have slighted ourselves in any way at the end. Be it love or spirituality, religion, sex, or whatever..
If "Trying to making others happy" gives you peace then go for it..It certainly does not make me happy trying to make others happy..No matter what "I" do..It will never provide peace within themselves.

Ya sure.
If you will try then you can find out for yourself that when someone feels happy because of your effort, you feel more happier than that person you made happy. It gives a lot of happiness.

I believe helping other's is what life is all about, but not necessarilly being a people pleaser. However helping other's usually makes them happy, people pleasing has a more selfish motive behind it sometimes. Way to stand up for what you believe in, though. It is so great!

Sure, why not? Make yourself happy first & foremost & then if you can make others happy too, so much the better. Life is to be enjoyed not just endured. The meaning of life is pleasure.
