Since I am new to African American literature, pardon me if my question sounds foolish.
How do the characters set in that era speak English as it is spoken today or as spoken by the White men and women? Is this the language in which the Black slaves talked to each other?

I agree. It's a wonderful book but not a light read. I'd say don't be in a rush to get through it. Take some time to really read and interpret it, and you'll enjoy it more.

if you aren't enjoying it, it is probably because you are only seeing most of it on a literal level. it might seem a little long if you are viewing it on the surface - try to see beyond that. think about the time period this book is written in (both literal for the author and the time period the characters are in) - research that some and see if that doesn't lead to some allusions. try exploring some of the themes of the book a little more. if you need help for a place to start, try looking at Cliffs Notes or Spark Notes as a base and go from there - those don't nearly go into as much depth as the book does, but at least it would be a starting point for you. try looking for repetitive words, actions, etc.

I read it years and years ago and I remember feeling pretty much as you do. It was a good book, but nothing to write home about.
