No.
Every time one of our civil liberties is taken by the government, we are hurt. As a nation, and as a free people. Our own govt is trampling on the fabric of the Constitution, and the core values that this country was founded upon.
People ask what rights I personally have lost. The right to counsel. The right to due process. The right to privacy. The right to assemble. Habeas corpus. Unreasonable searches. Warrantless wiretapping. The list of rights and civil liberties that have been trampled on by the Bush regime grows longer every year.
Every one of those rights stipped away was mine. Just because I never needed to invoke them didn't make them less mine. And just because you haven't needed them yet doesn't make them less yours.
We only have those rights we choose to defend. Only those rights we can defend. And if we do not defend them, we lose them. Not just for those who need them now -- but for all of us.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In honor of Pastor Martin Niemöller:
First they came for the 6th Amendment, but I hadn't been accused of a crime, so I didn't object to denial of counsel.
Then they came for the 4th Amendment, but I wasn't talking to anyone overseas, so they wouldn't be monitoring me.
Then they came for the rest of the 4th Amendment, but I only called my mother, so there was nothing suspicious in my phone records.
Then they came for the 1st Amendment, but I never associated with criminals, so I didn't worry about being convicted purely based on what other people might do.
Then they came for the 14th Amendment, but I never really understood the rules for Due Process (and wasn't allowed an attorney), so I didn't object.
Then they came for the rest of the 1st Amendment, but I never told anyone about what the government was doing, so again I remained silent.
Then they came for the 5th Amendment, ...... and I no longer had the right to remain silent.
well, they already took away habeas corpus...so thats gone. bill of rights - what are they?
my right to vote...well with electronic voting its anyones guess if my vote counts or not. (the candidates are puppets, crooks and liars in both parties anyway.)
they can spy on whoever they want without a warrant, so private communications are gone.
except maybe the usmail or courier mail (thats probably compromised too).
well there is always the "anti-"miranda rights...
"you dont have the right to remain silent...everything you say will be used against you in a court of law." (interrogation techniques and torture as defined by the president will get it out of you if you don't talk.)
you have the right to public defense...what a joke?
does a poor person have any rights left that are worth anything if someone rich and powerful wanted to challenge them, and then once they are in prison, what are civil liberties?
hmmm...well getting back to your question...
yeah, i want security. i want my security blanket and the civil liberty to use it.
If you answered that we lost no rights, then you are blind or naive..
Suspension of Habeas Corpus means that any federal agent can arrest you with out formal charges and haul you off to some unknown prison. HC means that you can demand they charge you and demand that you know what the charges are. It dates from the 1200's when the King made people disappear. Snooping without a formal warrant is another situation where you'll never know till after the fact. Any time the president does anything to anybody without following the laws of the United States, he violates all our rights, not just the one he did it to. This President shows his true colors when he writes letters about what portions of laws he will follow from Congress. Think about it... write your president right now and tell him as a citizen you are only going to honor part of the law... does that make sense to you. I know all of you have to be smarter than this. Many of the things George is doing are the same things Saddam did to his people. Saddam Tortured, had secret prisons, made the rules as he went along and denied people due process. Open your eyes and then watch the HBO special "Hacking Democracy" and you'll realize that this is more about taking back this country to again of, by and for the people... ALL OF THEM!!!
human beings ought to furnish up each civil liberty undemanding to guy, and we would nonetheless be liable to an attack via somebody. no longer something in this international is "foolproof." If somebody desires to do harm they'd and could. we are able to make it puzzling via putting rules and checkpoints, yet then we start to grow to be paranoid and each little thing that the terrorists are terrified of at the start starts off to crumble. the best thank you to harm the terrorists is for human beings and unfastened human beings international to proceed to stay their daily lives. The governments have what they % already in place to try against any terror danger. What they lack at the instant are not rules and administration, yet somewhat motivation to enforce the and shield the guidelines we now have.
Hell no. This is supposed to be a free country. Personally i really don't care if i die or not. Ya know? You die you die nothing you can do. Life isn't much to live for anyways (yes im emo). But i'd much rather be able to make a phone call or e-mail someone without having it read or tracked. Let the middle easterns blow up a tower. Oh big whoop. We'll trash their whole country. Besides, America really has to stop being racist and just let the whole thing go. Just cause of what a few of them did.
HELL, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since its inception in 1787, the Constitution have always guaranteed our rights! Now those are the very rights that have been taken away from us from the post-9/11 initiatives that Bush has created! And you saw the end result of this ****! We've lost our ******* rights because of this! Now I regretfully have to say that we've said goodbye to our 230-year-old democracy and unwillingly ushered in Bush's tyrannical rule and along with it his personal police-state!
I'm a little tired of people saying there have been no takings of rights under this administration. I've posted numerous examples but they keep on spouting it anyway. I guess Rush or one of those other radio bozos told em it isn't true or something.
Please vote so that at least one-half of one-third of our government is in the hands of the opposition Democratic party.
