You cry yourself to sleep? You must be having a very rough time!
Crying does the following:
1. Clears the tear ducts.
2. Causes the sinuses to clear somewhat
3. Cathartic release and expression of emotion
On the other hand, if you are crying frequently, then you are under severe stress or may be experiencing chronic emotional difficulties.
For example, stress may be generated from many sources - even from people we love. For example, your description of your boyfriend here makes him sound unsympathetic. Hopefully that is not accurate, however, you may be in a co-dependent relationship in which he is getting all of his needs met and you are getting none of your own... In which case, the crying is an indicator that you need to make a change.

Crying emotionally drains you and physically can wipe the crap out of you. As a female, I know during my cycle the tears swell up for no good reason but somehow make me feel better, I know nothing regarding the chemical part of it. Kind of like eating a dark chocolate candybar in a bubble bath. On a side note, if the bf wants you to stop, tell him you need space and he can take a temporary hike if he's insensitive to that particular need you are craving. That is just my opinion. Thanks for reading my answer.

It sounds funny, but if you eat a lot you naturally have to release a lot into the toilet. Likewise, if you drink a lot, you're going to have a similar result. Crying is the same. But the crazy thing is that people do not know they are taking in painful feelings and painful thoughts, let alone understand how to release them from their system.
Crying is perhaps the easiest and fastest way to release emotional pain, but unfortunately it has become socially unacceptable for both men and women to cry in public. We are already aware of all the social stigmas attached with those who cry in public (ie: weakness, in need of attention, etc.), but what most people are not aware of is the new scientific studies that actually prove tears caused from 'emotional crying' carry toxins not normally found in the tear created to simply moisten the eye.
Crying, like sneezing, coughing and defocating, is a natural way of releasing toxins that are associated with various emotions: both those considered 'good' and those considered 'bad'.

Crying is a wonderful stress releaser, or emotional "circuit breaker" that allows you to have your feelings and dispense with the emotional pressure so you can go through the emotional experience more completely. Sometimes, interestingly enough, crying can become an addictive behavior or crutch for some individuals, but when and if one actually crosses that line is a vague transition and hard to measure, as when any behavior becomes addictive. I remember about 30 years ago when that became true for me, and I'm pained at the memory of that "shortcoming" of mine, but, I'm a perfectionist of sorts, so, I'll just have to live with that "disappointment" and go on. Tell your boyfriend that if he doesn't learn to let himself cry, he'll regret it in later life through mental / emotional / and biological pressure that can make his life exceedingly and unnecessarily stressful, and can kill him. Oh, and I'm a retired mental health professional with 20+ years experience, in addition to just being human and having lived 50+ years. God Bless you, and your boyfriend.

A very healthy release! I always feel better after a good cry! Better to let it all out than to hold it in & get an ulcer. Sure your eyes may get puffy & red but your emotional & physical being will benefit from a cathartic cry. Very therapeutic!

your body creates a slightly toxic substance known as prolactin. Womens bodies create much higher amounts than men. Prolactin is released through tears so by crying you are flushing toxic compounds from your body.
