Check with your local community college to see if they offer courses in auto mechanics. Most community colleges allow high school students to enroll. Not only will you get instruction on engine basics, but you will begin to network with older students who may be able to give you information on job opportunities. Good luck!

Does your school have a work/school program of some type? Mine did, and I asked for a job at a gas station. I learned all about gasoline engines and their different systems, such as the cooling system, brakes, everything. It was the coolest thing. When the time frame for the job ended, the gas station asked me to stay on and I worked there until I graduated and moved away to college. So...try a work/study program at school, or try to get a job pumping gas! By the way, I'm 43 now and I still use that knowledge that I got working there on my own autos and my friend's autos!

ask around. see if anyone offers an apprenticeship. if that doesn't go well, try taking auto-mechanics in school.
