I do not have the HotSync cable but I do have a SD card so I can copy files onto that and transfer it to my Palm. But how can I install something instead of using Quick Install with the sync software.

you can transfer mp3's and other data files by using a card reader, but to install application software, you will need to buy a synch cable. The synching software is free for download from the Palm site. But you'll have to buy a synch cable for other things sorry, no way around it.

You have various options.

Since you have a Treo 650, you can easily install a lot of Treo applications simply by going to various Treo sites like mytreo.net ( http://mytreo.net ) using the built-in Blazer browser. In order to have access to the files for downloading, you need to first register at the site. Then, download the prc (Palm program file) directly onto your Treo. Run it and it should work or then it will unpack and install on your Treo. Can't get any simpler than that.

If you have a card reader, you can download the Palm programs onto a computer and then drag and drop the files over to the SD card. Then, pop the SD card back into your Treo. You may need to move or copy the program to the Treo's RAM (some programs need to be installed in RAM to work correctly).

As for a hotsync cable, there's a lot of online stores from Treo sites like mytreo.net , everythingtreo , treocentral etc. that sell hotsync cables for the Treo as well as very portable retractable hotsync cables that work very well. They aren't very costly and you may find that having a hotsync cable can be very helpful.
