Australia is one of the countries I would love to visit. I find it very surprising someone here didn't know of your country. Are you sure they were not teasing you? I would expect to find some very modern cities, like Sydney and some very exciting rural areas. I say exciting rural areas because I love plants and animals. I would love to see the different plants and animals of Australia. Meeting the people would be great too.

I reeeeaaaallly want to go there! Beaches, outback, Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, cities....downside, so darn far away, and would need probably a month just to see the places I want to go, let alone spend much time there. Maybe after I retire...
and honey, there are probably people here who have not heard of some of our 50 states, let alone Canada, Mexico, or anywhere further away!
(maybe you saw that Jim Carrey movie, where girl tells him she's from Austria? and he answers, "I'll throw another shrimp on the barbie for ya"...not that far fetched!)

Australia is the one place in the world I have always wanted to visit. Just never have.I read the Australian series of books and it seemed to give a little extra incentive.

I'm an American and when I think of Australia I think of a place I would love to visit someday. It has kangaroos and Koala bears. Friendly people with wonderful accents. Beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Of course I think of Steve, Terry, Bindy and Bob Erwin.
peace mate!

I can only speak for myself. I imagine it to be a lot like here. I imagine Sydney to be like a cleaner version of New York City. I cant imagine what the countryside (outback) is like. No it is not common for americans to not know australia. Just the really, really uneducated ones I guess. Oh and I imagine lots and lots of really fun, nice, and generous people because I have met so many australians and they ALL fit this description.

Most americans have heard of Australia. I personally think of sunny beaches and nice people down under. I've met a few australian women. They were all nice and always smiling

I think this: it's very far away, it has some of the last coral reefs on the east side, it has very hot parts, it has lots of animals running around that we don't have in America, and it used to be an island where countries shipped their convicts to.

yes its common, this years tourism survey showed that only 1 in 5 americans could find us on a world globe, despite being given hints "the land downunder" and "great southern land" most were looking in the northern hemisphere..........which i guess can be seen as a very good thing........
