Rolls as well as salads are handled by hand, not tongs. French fries that fall onto the counter are simply picked up and put back onto the plate. Servers grab part of the appetizers off the plate and eat it before serving it to the customers. I hate my job because of this because I feel it is unethical and potentially dangerous. Am I overreacting?

NO you are not over reacting!! Have you notified the managers? If so & you don't see changes, than I would call the health department & file a report. Otherwise nothing will change & someone could get sick! That's SO gross, I would hate it too! Where do you work so I know NOT to go there??

What customers don't see will not hurt them. Believe me your restaurant is not the only one who doesn't enforced their hygiene. You are not overreacting....You are just not use to seeing things like this. If you work at other restaurant you will see the same thing as well. I've worked at many restaurants and I always see this. If this is bothering you you should talk to your manager. If nothing is being done than I suggest you look for a new job that's not restaurants. imagine what kind of food poor tipper gets?

You should report these health code violations to the local health inspectors office. All restaurants must pass health and sanitation inspections to maintain their license. These violations can result in the customers becoming ill. The owners or managers may not be aware of these practices, but if they are and haven't stopped them they should be fined heavily and inspected more frequently until they have corrected the problems.

Kick back and relax, kid.The servers are human; the customers are human . . . what's the big deal?!
The other night my wife and I were ordering in a local restaurant when I saw something drop onto the waitress' forearm as she was taking our order. I said "I think you dropped something" and she looked down at her arm and said, "Oh, it's my gum," whereupon she thanked me, picked the piece of chewing gum off her arm, put it back in her mouth and finished taking our order.
My wife was a bit appalled, because she was thinking, what if she'd been serving our food when it happened instead of just taking our order. But I just laughed it off and we had a nice evening and meal.

Start looking for another job tomorrow!
As soon as you land a new job you can quit where you are and notify the health authority of the problems you observed and not be worried for yourself.
Cheers! and congrats on speaking up for cleanliness.

Unfortunately, you're not over-reacting. As the old saying goes, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." I believe that many restaurant workers think this to be very true, which is unfortunate for many restaurant-goers.

As far as yourself, I would maintain proper hygiene. You should definitely keep to yourself with your concerns around work, especially since you just started working.

I don't think I could eat at this restaurant, of course you hear about the waiter who was proud of the restarant he worked at. bragged food was never touched by human hands. when asked how he used the restroom, he laughed and stated I sdon't know about the other guys but I use my tongs. LOL LOL

you are not overreacting i was just like that 7 months ago, when i confronted the warehouse manager about it, 2 weeks later i was fired. everyone has a right to eat safe food if you think of all the restaurants and fast food places there are and what % of them actually live up to food handlers guidelines, its scary! BY the way dont eat at costco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's very dangerous to be touching food with bare hands. Who knows if these people washed their hands or covered a sneeze with their hand & then touched food? Yes, talk to the manager or write an anonymous note.
