well for a long time the scoring went down do to to many NHL teams and not enough talented players on a team like in the 80's when you had like 10 superstars on a team. but with the new rules there will start to see more 50 goals scorers in the league and their is already some projected to go over 60 if they keep up.

chris m>>>> you think the skilled level is better then back in the 80's Wayne Gretzky, Y. Kurri, M. Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brian Trottier, Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur, Billy Smith, Patrick Roy, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Tim Kerr, and the list goes on and on i cant forget Pat Lafontaine either. its simple to many teams in the NHL today, and if we never added all these new teams in the past 20 years the rules would of never had to change and the scoring would still be up.

I think it's because the talent level overall is so much better and everyone is so much more skilled that it's harder for one player to score so often. Plus, each night the players are going up against a great goalie, unlike the past where the talent level for goalies wasn't spread around. However, last year there were 5 50 goal scorers, while in the three years before that, there were only 2 COMBINED!

The 50 goal scorer is making a comeback...remember the offensive players were suffocated for the last 10 years because of the "neutral zone trap"
Last years 50 goal scorers as follows:

JAROMIR JAGR R NYR 54
ALEXANDER OVECHKIN 52
DANY HEATLEY 50
ILYA KOVALCHUK 52
JONATHAN CHEECHOO 56

Goalies are first of all much more flexible and more agile than they used to be. And their equipment is bigger than it used to be (even with the reduction in size thanks to the new CBA) so it just isn't as easy to score any more. But don't worry, we are starting to see more 50 goal scorers now, there'll be quite a few this year.

I think talent is level as well as people who can score 50 are a marked man every night and the intense focus on them inhibits 50 goals a year.

Not as many goals are being scored. The goalies are bigger and better and have better equipment

I think it ha to do with the new rules on how much curve they can have on the stick. more curve gives a harder shot. now they have a limit on it and its very small compared to the old days.
