And how important is it that they get the correct amount?

I give my son 3 sippy cups full a day....he will be 2 in Dec.
The main thing is the calcium in it. If your child doesn't really want all that much milk, orange juice is great alternative, it has just as much calcium! I also give him childrens vitamins ( gummy vites, you can purchase them at the drug store but cheaper at wal mart ) And dark green veggies also have a lot of calcium.
I am on WIC and an only allowed to get whole milk. Since my son is already a big boned boy, I don't feel he needs the extra "fat" in his diet. So I give him 3 cups a day, and get the rest of his calcium to him in the otherways I described to you.
The amount of milk the child will need varies on the other things he consumes in a given period of time (24hrs) If he is not getting a lot of the calcium and other things in milk, with other things in his diet he will need more than 3 cups. If you can get him the other vital nutrients through other foods and drinks, he may only need the 3 cups.
Best to talk to your pediatrician about this, since I don't know your child. They may also refer you to a nutritionalist. Since it is sometimes a daunting task to get toddlers to eat a well balanced diet.
In the mean time, invest in some childrens vitamins - to be sure he or she is on the safe side!

My children were milk allergies and when tthey came off the bottle at around 1 year, would not drink the formula from a cup.(this was before the days of all the nice soy milk products on the dairy isle). My Dr told me not to worry about it, they were on a multi vitamin and he said there is plenty of calcium in other foods for them to get what they need. Most bread is calcium fortified as well as cereals. My kids grew up on apple juice mostly and are now 27 and 23..So do not fret if he will not take alot of milk.

I also have friends who have children that all they want to do is drink milk...usually the flavored kind..and Dr said that too much milk will tend to make them fat, so just make sure the milk is an addition to the meal and not THE MEAL itself.
