It could be a matter of sunlight... too much or too little. It could also be a problem of overspray. Is this part of your garden close to another person's property? Or next to the road? Spraying from another source could be coming onto your property and causing the damage.

Must have to do with the amount of sunlight they are getting. Do they get too much? That would make the ground dry up quicker, too. Do they get too little? That would make the ground stay moist, causing the roots to be okay. The tops would still wilt away to nothing.

Check out the rest of your garden. What is different about that part of the garden?

It might even be because the ground is full of rocks. Then the water would run off quickly and the plant would not absorb enough of the water.

It probably is a fungus. U need to double dig that area (take a sample to your extension service for analysis) and work in 100 lbs of rich lively compost. . Your soil, or watering habits, or lighting is definitely off for what you are currently trying there.. the analysis can tell you what it is.

Call your County Extension Office. They are equipped to analyze it and tell you what's deficient or too plentiful. Your sample should be from surface to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

I have one area of my yard the same way and I really believe that that area is simply not getting enough sun... the plants just curl up and die... I have decided.. in my yard... just to not plant anything in that particular area due to lack of enough sun
