Right, if they were dropped into space, they'd be dead. However, assuming you meant that THEY had the correct breathing apparatus....Was the question like "If there were 12 people dropped onto a desert Island, with no prior memory or previous knowledge what would they do?"
Primarily they would have to adapt to their environment using a process of trial and error. This also introduces the concept of whether intelligence is inherent or due to external factors. So in this instance, it may also perhaps depend on the individuals 'dropped' into this situation, as there would be people who would excel, due to the scenario. For example some people maybe naturally more practical and a physical environment may be more conducive where as others maybe more theoretical and these skills may come into play in another situation.
However, what may also happen, as would be the case in the example already outlined is that within the group, everyone may have a certain ability or skill - that they could share and contribute to the group, to ensure its' survival.
