A lot...any debts one party incurrs in just a separation is considered a debt the other party owes as well. If your "ex" partner purchases a house and doesn't pay the mortgage YOU can be liable for all the back payments as well as the monthly mortgage because you are STILL legally married. While you can still share a joint bank account one partner can go and withdraw ALL of the funds in any of the bank accounts and do whatever they please with the money and not receive any penalties for it because you are STILL legally married. If you meet someone who's company you enjoy and decide to move in to gether you are committing adultery because you are STILL legally married. Not to mention the fact that you can NOT marry anyone else because you are STILL legally married...The only reason to seperate would be if you planned on getting back together. If you don't have such a plan I suggest just getting the divorce.

Separation is fine if you don't want to move on to another relationship. I was separated for a long time to keep my ex on the insurance. When he could afford his own insurance we divorced. I do not believe in dating while still married, so I had to wait quite a while to begin dating again. Other than that I had no problem with being separated instead of divorced.

You cannot re-marry if your are not divorced. Most importantly don't buy lottery tickets, your spouse might get half the winnings.
