Books can give you some basic background info and help you understand working principle and stuff. But there's no substitute for field experience. I'd say just skim through any good book that deals with hardware in sufficient depth and start working in real world. You'l get to know a lot this way understand where things start differing from the descriptions in a book.

i have books and found experience is the best if you have money most recent hardware ive bought has had issues its hard to tell if its software or hardware without lots of parts to try diffrent combinations like one strange thing i had was my gigabyte nf4 motherboards after the first windows update to media center 2005 itwouldnt boot i changed boardsand the same thing then i used an ati x850 video card and it worked mediacenter on laptops the dvd drive performanceon the vista ready laptops is so poor some programs need a usb drive to install and they lock on some dvd movies

Fix it with a hammer. That's a better way to fix computers. At lest it will fix your fustration.
